An unfulfilled promise - Mr. Dara Mistry not with us

Dear Friends,

I still cant believe the that Mr. Dara Mistry is not with us anymore.
It was not long before his sudden end, he had given me call and had told that now that he will have some time and would like spend it with Harmonica Club Members.
We were planning to have his session in coming meet and he had promised that he will be happy to give one.
In fact myself, Avinash had contacted him few months ago for his session, however because of some personal reasons he could not give the time.
On 30-Oct-09 he called me and told that now he can spare some time.

Who can forget the Spanish tune played by him in one of our Club meeting.
His attitude and enthusiasm was above his 70+ age. And it was evident in the way he played the instrument.

I still remember my first conversation with him, when seeing Harmonica Club article in news paper, he had called me.
He was the first person I remember who praised our effort and formation of this club.
It was quite an encouragement from such a senior player who told me that more than 30 years in this city, he always wished a club like this should be there.
With his absence I feel all harmonica enthusiasts have lost a dear friend and a guide.

I feel though his promise to give a session for all harmonica club members sadly remains unfulfilled, his kind words of encouragement and good wish will always be with us !

I pray god, his soul last in peace!

I request all harmonica members to attend The harmonica club condolence meet in Cubbon Park this Sunday at 10.30am !

Mr.Jia Yi He on chords & Mr.Sulaiman Jamaal on Lead

Yup thatz a Harmonica? But it’s played like a flute, violin, clarinet, piano…WOW

“Wonderstruck”, were the audience at KYRA, Indiranagar, Bangalore. A little instrument which every body would have too-too-ed, in their child hood, took the stage this time, with Western Classics and Jazz played on it.(Apr 13th 09)

As Mr.Abe mentioned, it was indeed a double treat to listen to 2 great Harmonicists, Mr.Jia-Yi He & Mr.Sulaiman Jamaal.

The audience enjoyed every moment of the program, literally EVERYTHING, Harmonica by Mr.Jamaal, Songs by Ms.Priya, and the master performance of the day by Mr.Jia Yi He.

Ask if any of the THCB members were glued to their chairs? Nay… everybody was standing, with their retinas & lenses focused on the Master and his harmonica, and the earlobes acting as radars receiving and savoring the mousiqi, indeed it was truly a lifetime opportunity to watch the HARMONICA VIRTUOSO (everybody at the end of the program would have realized the meaning of the word ‘virtuoso’).

The Entertainer, Cherry pink, Clarinet Polka, Flight of the bumble bee, Czardas were amongst the classics played. With use of different techniques. Mr.He, in Chinglish, ‘u play on any other instrumentO, I play on harmoniCa’.

Displaying his mastery on the instruments, he showed how he can play in different styles,

~ as a piano “to play piano, 2 handsO, but harmonicao only 1 mouthO”, saying this he showed his technique mastery playing the harmonica just like a piano, with the lead on right corner of mouth and chords on the left corner.

~ Czardas, a classical masterpiece was played with 4 TREMOLO harmonicas (watch the video). Wow …

~ Amazing use of different techniques …

Mr.JiaYi-He, the harmonica virtuoso from China, is now settled in New York and is a Harmonica teacher at the Turtle Bay School of Music. Mr.He started playing harmonica at the age of 11 yrs inspired by his elder sister playing the harmonica. Apart from Harmonica he plays violin, piano, clarinet, and bassoon.

Thanks to Mr.Jamaal for arranging a meet up the next day, 4 lucky ones got to meet Mr.Jia Yi He. “it’s the greatness of Mr.He, that he shared many of the techniques with an open heart and with a willingness to teach… most of the people only keep it to themselves”, Mr.Jamaal said.

Though we had met Mr.Jamaal for the first time, we were so comfortable to discuss, learn, practice with him and Mr.He. Mr.He demonstrated the different types of harmonica and many techniques. Bending, the pucker, tonguing, tongue switching, trilling, breathing techniques, the fish embouchure etc…

“during my childhood, I always wanted to become a Christian boy, because my neighborhood boy got a harmonica as a Christmas gift from Santa” quoted Mr.Jamaal , when asked about how he got into playing harmonica.

the director saido, ‘u r no goodo, music fasto’, said Mr.He, while he was sharing with us the criticality of timing while recording music for a movie. Mr.He, narrated this incident about recording music for a movie when the director complained that there was a terrible mismatch in the scene and music and there was an issue out of it. And the reason was the MUSIC ended earlier than the movie scene. And the time gap was….1 second.

And the impromptu jamming of Mr.Jamaal on the lead harmonica and Mr.He on the Chords harmonica was wonderful, watch the video.

“India warmo, Indian people warmo… good placeo…”, “my childtime dream coming true by visiting India now”, expressed Mr.JiaYi He.

Not often, we come across occasions which re-ignite the Spark , Inspire and Motivate us to revisit and pursue our passions. One such occasion was this, ‘meeting Shri Prakash - a renowned accordion player who has excelled and mastered the instrument.’…read further… 

As part of our learning process we met Shri M B Prakash, at his residence in Basavangudi, Bangalore. 

Having traveled widely across Continents, Prakashjis playing has been acclaimed and appreciated by the masters across the world. He specializes in playing the instrument in its original style, the European style, with Spanish melodies, Polka,  (Europe - origin of Accordian). 

Prakashji’s, mastery over the instrument would make anybody feel that accordion is an integral part of his body, just like his hands and legs. 

We got some valuable tips for playing harmonica, which was his favourite during his college days, the right use of techniques like vamping and shrilling… and most importantly ‘practice’, and group presentations.

In India the ‘Raj Kapoor’ era, saw accordion being widely used in the bollywood compositions…. 

“Accordian”, was originally invented in Europe in the early 19^th century.  Accordian has been widely used in folk music in Europe, North America and South America, apart from Contemporary styles such as rock, pop-rock. The accordion is used in both solo and orchestra performances of classical music. And considered as “one-man band”, as it needs no accompanying instrument. The performer would normally play the melody on the right hand part and the accompaniment consisting of bass and chord buttons on the left hand part. It needs a great coordination of the mind.

It was indeed a great day, with a wonderful person, great music and a lot of inspiration. Thanks to Prakashji and also to Shivkumarji ( student of Shri Prakash)  for having taken us to the maestro…

An interview with Shri Gautam Choudhury...

Shri Gautam Choudhury, settled now in Holland for the last 40 years, is one of the finest Harmonica Players from India. He was associated with Shri Salil Choudhury for a long time in his musical journey and has done several recordings along with Salil da. Gautamji emphasizes on learning the Basic Theory of Music to learn Harmonica. “Internet is a ocean of knowledge on Harmonica with great stuff for Learning from the international players”. 1.    How did the passion for Harmonica begin, how did you learn to play?

I must have been about 7-8 years old at school when another school kid brought this little strange instrument which produced heavenly sound. He refused to let me touch it. I decided there and then that I must have one of those things. A year later my grandma gave me some money on my birthday and with that I bought a "Wren" tremolo harmonica. It sounded beautiful and after a couple of days I was playing "jana gana mana" ! All by ear of course !

2.    What do you think makes the harmonica a great instrument?

Its an instrument you can take with you anywhere, play whenever you feel like and it gives other people a lot of happiness. A great way to make friends. If you play it well then you make even more friends and they take you seriously. Harmonica is a very versatile and a complex instrument. It is also comparable to any other orchestral instrument (Sax, Flute, Trumpet, Violin, Cello etc) . To play it well, you must learn it well - then you can play wonderful music alone or with other instruments.

It is very easy to play a harmonica badly - and it is very difficult to play it well.

A friend of mine once said  "With the music in your pocket you'll have music in your heart" !

3.    What styles of music do you play on Harmonica?

I guess all styles ! I play western music, Indian film songs, Bengali modern songs, Latin American music, some western classical pieces etc. Basically I love good melody and good rhythm with nice arrangement.

4.    Which way would you recommend "Learning by ear"  or "Learning by formal method" ?

"Learning by Ear" is very tempting and I guess a lot of us prefer to use that method. But it has severe limitations. You wouldn't like to play Bhairavi Raag in Sitaar without years of practice and study. It also depends on how good your musical ear is and how good is your ability to play a song exactly like the original without missing (or corrupting) a note. Unfortunately not all of us are born with the same "musical ear" !

If you want to learn any other instrument like a Sitar, Violin, Guitar, Synthesiser etc you go to a teacher ( Guru) and learn the theory and all the techniques to master the instrument. So, why we do not want to learn the harmonica seriously ? You don't need a Harmonica teacher to learn the basic concepts of music - which I think is a "Must" before you learn the harmonica.

So, my advice would be to develop your knowledge about the harmonica, the music theory and also develop your ear. A good player must have a good ear and must be good at reading notes, understand various key (scale) structures, is familiar with the basic chord progression and in general prepared to work hard to master the instrument.

Also, listen to other International Harmonica players such as Jerry Murad, Larry Adler, Tommy Reilly, Toots Thielemans etc (all to be found in YouTube) and study their tone, their harmonica holding, their techniques etc.

When I started playing there was no Internet. Now, Harmonica players have access to a huge number of resources - make use of them.

5.    What are the common problem for beginners, and what should they do to correct it?

The most common problem is not to take the Harmonica as a serious musical instrument and just start playing any song very badly ! My advice is to take it seriously as a serious musical instrument. Try not to fall into the trap of playing a song and quickly upload it to YouTube and expect people to say "Wow ! You are great !" Sadly that is what I have seen so far ...

Be inquisitive and humble and learn/practice, learn/practice and learn/practice.

Use the Internet to increase your knowledge on Harmonica, how to maintain it, how to repair it etc.

Once again : Listen to other International players. Sadly I can not name any Indian player yet as a role model.

Do not start uploading songs in Youtube randomly - you are just abusing the bandwidth and creating a bad reputation of Harmonica. This is more prevelant in India.

After playing for a while tap the harmonica hard on your palm and leave it outside for 10 min before putting it back in the case. Clean the surface and the mouth plate well with a clean cloth.

6.    Which brand -model harmonica is your favorite, and why do you prefer it over others?

It doesn't matter which model one is playing. If the harmonica is in tune and is airtight with a smooth slide action, it is good enough. A good player makes any brand sound great. A bad player will find an excuse to blame the brand/model etc. I play Hohner and Hering. I like the Hering because I like its mouth plate (being slightly narrower it fits my mouth better), it is airtight (no air leakage) and it sounds wonderful. Besides my 4-Octave Hering, I prefer the 3-Octave Hohner - not the 4-Octave Hohner due to its slightly fatter mouth plate. But - all this is my personal preference.

I use only the C-Harmonica.

7.    What do you think is the most effective way to practice?

First you must know how to blow and draw cleanly - For example : just practice "sa re ga ma..." up and down using short-notes/long notes  using "single notes" and make sure each note is clean ! DO NOT try to play in "chords". You will create noise. 

You can play in "Octaves" - but it requires a lot of practice and the harmonica must be in perfect tune.

Use variations like "sa ga pa, sa re dha, re pa ni" etc.... Write down these sequences first. Use any vocal excercise book for this.

Learn to read notes. Use any music book (Indian books are fine) to practice your notes.

Play "sa re ga ma..." using different notes as "sa". 

You MUST learn how to play a song in a different scale than just C. So, try the note "D" (5D) as sa for example....

My advice would be to start learning the staff notation. It is international music language. Also it has longtime been a standard in Mumbai/Chennai Film music world also.

8.    How do you see Harmonica as a musical instrument being perceived in India as differently from other countries ?

It is not percieved as a musical instrument in India and it is not really taken seriously. Primarily because we, the harmonica players, do not take it seriously. We also don't have any harmonica teaching methods/Teachers/Schools to teach harmonica. No role models either. Unfortunately we don't have any well-known harmonica player (yet) who plays the instrument correctly according to the International standard. In other countries harmonica is taken a bit more seriously and nearly every harmonica player I met can read music. They also have many brilliant players as role models. 

9.    How do you foresee the Harmonica Movement as we see in a few cities in India...

The movement is very encouraging but they have no future unless the instrument is studied seriously like any other serious instrument. There is still rampant "vamping" and "hand vibrato" coupled with futile efforts to play Hindi Film songs incorrectly ! Nobody even tries to better himself/herself.

10.    A few tips and advice for the Harmonica Club members …

I guess, the answers to the above questions may give you many hints. I don't want to repeat those answers.

To write about all my memories/peer groups would take a long time. Shortly, I knew Larry Adler quite well. I have met Jerry Murad and his Harmonicats, Tommy Reilly, Toots Thielemans etc. I also know many International players quite well. I am also a member of NHL (National Harmonica League <UK) and SPAH (US). I wrote about SPAH recently in HarmonicaIndia.

I used to have my own Harmonica Group "Bloworms" (many years ago) in Kolkata with me playing the Chord Harmonica and my friend Parimal Dasgupta playing the lead (Chromatic). I also played the Bass Harmonica for many years with a couple of groups in Europe.

In the '70s we made a BBC documentary called "Playing The Thing" - dedicated to Harmonica. Many world class players had performed in that documentary.

I have also participated in numerous Harmonica festivals and know many International players.

b) Discography (details of the albums released, music company, any online site where these can be purchased).

I have recorded three cassettes and two CDs so far (many years ago). One cassette and the CD of Bengali songs of Salil Chowdhury "Durer Thikana" (1996) , one cassette of Hindi songs of Kishore - "Tribute to Kishore" (1994), one hindi cassette of Salil Chowdhury songs "A Tuneful Tribute to Salil Chowdhury" (1993). I don't know if HMV still sells them ! Try the Internet. These days everything is pirated!

Mr.Raja Rao... the snake charmer tune

Mr.Raja Rao, started playing harmonica in1954, during his engineering college days. Seeing a classmate who played in one of college function, Mr.Rao got motivated to start playing .

Interested in Classical music, he plays and teaches Violin. Loves to play film songs and some Carnatic tunes on the Harmonica.

A civil engineer by profession, was in Cambodia during his last assignment with UNDB. Recalls with pride of having played harmonica in Cambodia. Snake charmer song is the favorite of Mr. Rao.

Mr.Rao aims at achieving professional levels in playing harmonica and wants to improve on the techniques front. And he is also willing to guide the learners and the club with his knowledge of Classical Music.  

Mr.Jacob Mathews...

Watch out Jacob Mathews playing his “Hohner Pucker”…

Mr.Jacob Mathews, started playing the Harmonica at an early age of 8 years, he has learnt if from his brother who played the harmonica. Jacob recalls with a giggle, how his brother didn’t allow him to touch the harmonica during his childhood. One fine day Mr.Jacob successfully, picked it up and start playing. Quite active during his childhood days, Jacob played at school & college functions. Also performs in public and private functions. Recalls his memories of having played the Harmonica in 1964, when the late Prime Minister Mrs.Indira Gandhi visited Bangalore.

Notes of Harmonica flow in my family’s blood says he, his father, brother, son, daughter every body plays the harmonica.

“Yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum”, was the first song he recalls having played. Jacob enjoys playing using the tonguing and double tonguing techniques for the fast songs.

Young Jacob, played with the orchestra at Gemini Film Studios at Chennai when he was 12 years old. Has been into interior designing as profession and now wants to lead a retired musical life… also wants to teach youngsters the art of playing Harmonica and popularize the instrument….

Mr.Dara Mistry

Mr.Dara Mistry, a familiar name in the Harmonica circles in the country, has been playing the Harmonica for almost 61 years, which he started at the age of 11 years. Recalling his memories, he stresses on PRACTICE, which used to be 2 hours for him every day. Mr. Mistry has had his lessons from Mr.Damri, the Harmonica legends, who happened to be his fathers close friend. Mr.Mistry's expertise includes Western Classical Music apart from Indian music...

11th Jan 09 - Cubbon Park...

The 11^th Jan , meet up of the Harmonica Club, was a very happening one seeing a turnout of 28 participants, thanks to DH & Deepa for the same.

Now coming to the crux... this article proved to be a volcano erupting out some hidden diamonds to the surface, trust me, not the raw stones, but polished, glittering one with reflections as bright enough to guide and motivate the Harmonica Club Bangalore… 

Presence of Mr. Dara Mistry, disciple of the harmonica legend Mr. Firoze Damri, was quite motivating, we had some short lecdem, with the belly dance music played by him. Watch out the video…

Mr.Raja Rao, Mr.Jacob Mathew, Mr.Shrinivasan, Mr.Subrayan, were the seniors who surfaced displaying their Harmonica Talents. Dr.Arun, Mr.C A Ravi, Mr. Gopinath, Mr.Gyara, and many more of us were in this meet, Also we saw the entry of the first lady in the group, Welcome Ms.Janaki.
